Healthcare Access: Voices of Latino Immigrants and Their Health Insurance Coverage in the Kansas City Area
Communities Concerned for Immigrants and Refugees held an important event at Lenexa City Hall on Novermber 21, 2019 regarding a recent Healthcare study conducted on the experience immigrants and refugees in the Kansas City area face through accessing local healthcare.
Randy Capps is Director of Research for U.S. Programs at the Migration Policy Institute. His areas of expertise include immigration trends, the unauthorized population, immigrants in the U.S. labor force, the children of immigrants and their well-being, and immigrant health-care and public benefits access and use.
Mariana Ramírez, LMSW is the Director of the JUNTOS Center for Advancing Latino Health at the Population Health department at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She oversees a growing number of health research projects and academic-community partnerships to eliminate health disparities experienced by Latino communities in Kansas.
Francisco Martinez, MA, CHI™
Francisco was born in Mexico City, Francisco "Paco" is the Medical and Culture Language Coaching Program manager at Children's Mercy Hospital. He works with coaches and bilingual residents to improve their communicative skills and understanding of Spanish-speaking patients' cultural beliefs. Francisco's background includes experience in healthcare, interpretation, and teaching.
Patrick Sallee is the CEO of Vibrant Health. He joined the organization three years ago as they were going through a transition to pursue Federally Qualified Health Center status. Patrick has a master's degree in public administration from UMKC and has worked for 15 years in the nonprofit sector in Kansas City.
REACH HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION:
Brenda Sharpe is President and CEO of the REACH Healthcare Foundation. The foundation’s purpose is to create access to quality healthcare for the poor and underserved. Brenda is a member of the Board of Directors and Finance Committee of Grantmakers in Health, a national organization dedicated to helping foundations and corporate giving programs improve the health of all people.
Carla Gibson is a Senior Program Officer at the REACH Healthcare Foundation, responsible for program development and grants administration in the foundation’s priority outcome areas of Enroll All Eligible, Close the Coverage Gap, and Strong Safety Net, as well as for special projects. Gibson joined REACH in 2006 and has guided the foundation’s health equity investments.
